Abstract: The purpose of this study is to propose the educational signifi cance of the design of the active learning seminar with graduate students from Japan, China, Korea and the Philippines from the perspective of a grand design of a workshop. This active learning seminar was held at Kansai University from October 29 to November 4 by inviting twenty four undergraduate and graduate students from South Normal University, Hanyang University, Bulacan University, since these universities have a sister relationship with Kansai University. The purpose of this seminar was to let students majoring Informatics learn about gender issues through a participatory workshop while acquiring the skills of utilizing English in discussion and presentation. The seminar was designed to learn about gender issues in relation to media, education, career, and society, through lectures, group work and discussion. Thus, the educational signifi cance of this seminar was analyzed using the grand design of workshop, represented by four concepts: “cooperation,” “improvisation,” “embodiment,” and “personal causation.” Records of the seminar, committee meetings, observations, fi eld notes, and questionnaires were gathered as data for analysis. The analysis confi rmed that “cooperation” was established through “improvisation” and “embodiment”, “Personal causation” was not analyzed due to limited data. Throughout the workshop, participants became acquainted with each other and learned gender issues harmoniously. Therefore, it was proposed that “concern-learn” would be an important educational pattern for participants to learn relevant issues.
